When the world is spinning at maximum speed and you need to take a break from life… When is the right time to slow down?
How do you find the time to live in the moment, to dedicate your attention to what truly matters?
I try to take a break from life to do things that bring me joy so today, I decided on a whim that I’d visit the Vancouver Art Gallery in search of inspiration, beauty, answers, joy and quiet time. Oh, and I also took photos because I enjoy it!

When life gets overwhelming
Needless to say, life has no plan of slowing down. Certainly, the world is speeding up, mostly due to technology I would say, and we humans are coping to keep up.
I identify as a sensitive empath meaning I am in tune with other people’s emotions and energies. For most of my life, I found this very difficult to deal with and function on a day-to-day basis. Nowadays, I can control the impact, or lack thereof, that the environment has on my mood and energy. Through meditation, self-empowerment, and learning, I have a deeper understanding of who I am, what I need and how to best live my life. Perhaps I can share what has helped me in a separate blog post.
life is like a camera…unknown
Focus on what’s important,
capture the good times,
develop from the negatives,
and if things don’t work out,
give it another shot.
Spend time alone to love yourself more
So how do you slow down life?
We’ve become conditioned to do more, spend more, be more all of the time. Whether we’re addicted to the computer screen, cellphone screen or television screen, there seems to be little time we give to ourselves to unplug and unwind, aside from when we sleep.
There is an underlying fear of judgment in our society that if we are not constantly on the move, then we are failing in some area of our lives. Where does this irrational fear stem from?
Let’s remember what fear is: False Evidence Appearing Real.
Fear is merely the absence of love. When we feel fear, we should recognize it for what it is and then work to fill and mend it with love.
Love is a daily practice and way of life, now more so than ever. In a culture that thrives on fake news, shocking news headlines and celebrity gossip, taking the time to become centered in our own lives is crucial to our ongoing happiness and health.
Tools and methods such as meditation, visualization, affirmations, and self-discovery are becoming quite mainstream and that’s because more and more people are waking up and realizing that the current way of life (aka busy, busy, busy!) is not sustainable. We are realizing that when we remove the stress and pressure of everyday life, we are happy, free, creative, inspired, relaxed, calm, peaceful, loving, kind and present; this is truly our natural state of being except that we have become disconnected from this state because we’ve been conditioned and connected to an alien state that is run by technology.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that technology is pure evil and the reason for the downfall of humanity… Technology has allowed us to live more colorful lives; It has brought the world together onto a single digital platform. For example, due to technology, we have cameras that allow us to capture moments instantaneously, photographs that speak a language of color and energy and emotion, a language we can appreciate and understand.
I guess what I mean to say is that technology is a tool that humans can control and utilize for the betterment of their lives or work. Unfortunately, it seems that technology has taken control over humans and enslaved their minds and bodies to it.
I believe all is not lost and that there is still hope for us to find the balance between work, life, and play. I believe the road to finding a balance begins with self-love. Kindness is often an act we forget to show ourselves. In my experience, the act of kindness amplifies the light and love innately in us and from there, we can begin to be filled up with love and light. From this place, we are capable of giving and sharing to the world around us in a healthy manner.
The greatest gift we can give to ourselves and others is the ability to love unconditionally
Only love is real.
Take a moment and sit with that fact.
Nothing else simply matters, right? All of the doubt, fear, negativity, worry, stress, anger and anxiety. They are states that serve no purpose except that we are out of alignment with who we truly are, ie. love. If we begin to recondition ourselves and consciously take responsibility for our emotional and mental state, through personal growth and development, then life and our journey has the potential to be effortless and enjoyable. When we become triggered by emotions, we can objectively assess the triggers and redirect our course.
True inner healing and reflection requires an incredible amount of courage and unconditional love that we must show ourselves. If you struggle with self-love and tend to focus more on fear, be kind to yourself. It’s okay to feel the fear but the key takeaway I want to share with you is that you must feel the fear and do whatever scares you anyway. Breaking a habit takes a lot of consistent work and the same can be said for building a new habit.
Fill yourself up with goodness
Are there a lot of triggers that cause stress in your daily life? Begin today by doing something fun, enjoyable, creative, peaceful and relaxing. Take a 10-minute break from the screen or work or from relationships, right now (or wait until after you’ve finished reading this post)! Whether you take time to read something uplifting, journal, listen to music, stare out into the sky, go for a walk, cuddle with your pet (love this one), have a hot bath, exercise, meditate or make yourself a delicious treat, do something that will make you feel good at that moment.
Little by little, the acts of love and kindness you show yourself will then create space for you to share the same love and kindness to others. You will have created space and the capacity to give without feeling burned out, drained, moody, etc…
Art as a release
As you begin to explore your passions and allow yourself to do the things that bring you joy, you will naturally want to make these things a priority in your life and lifestyle. Art has always been a form of release for me and so I have made it a practice to visit the art gallery in Vancouver on a regular basis (I purchased an annual membership). Every time I visit, I always leave with new thought, clarity and creative inspiration.
I hope you live a life of immense passion, beauty and happiness.
