Hey summer, where are you in such a rush to get to?
Before the month of August is completely over, I am bringing you seven ways to have the best staycation in your city or town at any time of the year because we all deserve a getaway now and then, right? Right, so let’s get right into it!

Treat Yourself To A One Night Getaway
Sometimes all we need for a refresh is a change in environment. This first tip is done easily enough. Search for hotels or B&B’s, camp sites or Air BnB’s for a change in scenery. Pick an area of your city that you don’t often frequent or that you particularely love and aim to explore and enjoy it as a tourist. In other words, treat yourself!
I recently had the privilege to have a wonderful and relaxing staycation at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia here in Vancouver, Canada (disclaimer: this post is not sponsored nor affiliated with the companies mentioned and all opinion and thoughts are of my own, as always). It was my second stay at this hotel and while my first stay back in April was amazing, somehow the experience during my second stay over the long weekend in August was truly impressive.
We enjoyed an overnight stay in the Executive one-bedroom suite on the ninth floor, which overlooked the hotel’s central terrace and lounge, Reflections. The two room suite consisted of a dining area, half bathroom and living space in the front room. The suite was extremely spacious and elegantly decorated and laid out.
The master bedroom consisted of a working area/desk, walk-in closet, king-size bed, and a marble encased en-suite bathroom with a large soaker tub, rain forest shower and his & her sinks. The Executive suite is about the size of an average downtown condo so needless to say, the space in these suites is incredibly generous and luxurious.
We did experience a delay with check-in and had to wait a few hours but that was smoothed over by the staff who made special care to ensure we were well looked after, starting with a welcome charcuterie board from the manager (thank you Michael Skinner), which we greatly enjoyed with a cup of mid-afternoon tea.
Check Out The Local City Events
There are usually a number of free events taking place each week and weekend to enjoy. Do some research and check out an outdoor festival or show taking place in your area and visit them.
Once we freshened up after our afternoon snack, we left the hotel and set off towards the West End to watch the annual Celebration of Light fireworks competition display that evening. It happened to be the last show of the competition and it was Canada’s turn to light up the sky.
It’s a tradition of ours to get take-out and set up on the beach prior to the show starting. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy Vancouver’s weather and scenery any day of the week in the summer.
By the time we walked from the hotel to Sunset Beach with our food and drinks, we were famished and ready to enjoy our feast with a view!
Unfortunately the sky was gray and tinged with red due to the smokey haze from the forest fires that covered Vancouver and the lower mainland for days. Luckily this did not stop the show and the fire works lit up the sky beautifully!
Create A Summer Playlist And Enjoy It Over A Bottle Of Wine With Someone Special
This may be the easiest and simplest tip I can offer. When you’re considering a staycation, try relaxing with some great music and a beautiful bottle of red wine with a friend or loved one on a warm and relaxing night.
By the time we walked back to the hotel after the show, we were in the mood for a night cap. Unfortunately the lounge had just closed so we went back to our hotel room only to be pleasantly surprised with a bottle of red wine from the front office supervisor. Thank you Jacki Inoferno for the thoughtful and perfectly timed gift, we truly enjoyed your hospitality.
Visit A Spa Or Health Gym
If a getaway seems like too much time to commit to, consider investing a few hours into your self-care and health with a pamper session at a spa or health gym. Whether it’s an hour float session, a massage, a manicure/pedicure, a mindfulness yoga class, a facial, a steam room session, or simply an at-home sheet mask session, etc…, taking time to redirect your focus on the external world towards your internal world will refresh your mind and body and help prevent burn out.
I found out that the spa at Rosewood Hotel Georgia’s, Sense, is the only hotel spa to be awareded five-stars in the Forbes Travel Guide in all of Canada. If I had known that, I would have loved to arrange for a visit to the spa. I suppose it’s a good reason to go back to the Rosewood for a spa visit in the near future!
A morning session at the hotels’ gym and pool was exactly what we needed the next day. After an incredibly comfortable sleep in the gigantic king-sized bed (seriously, I slept like a baby), we made our way to the gym and pool for a refresh.
The fitness centre was perfectly cool, clean and well-laid out with plenty of exercise machines, weights, a separte barre room and generous views of the city skyline.
The pool was my absolute favourite part of the morning. I happily discovered that the pool at Rosewood Hotel is saltwater, so it is much healthier than chlorine pools, and an invigorating and stimulating detox for the body due to healthy ions.
Splurge With A Sunday Brunch
It was a glorious and sunshine-filled day, which we enjoyed with an outdoor brunch on Reflection’s terrace. We had the Georgia club sandwich, Cobb salad with extra fries. The food was quickly prepared by the chef in the open kitchen on the terrace. The service was prompt and the ambiance was lively and cheerful. The brunch menu consisted of a large selection of summer cocktails, fresh, artisan and even locally sourced delicacies to suit a wide variety of palettes.
By searching for a local brunch spot you’ve never tried and that has a great atmosphere, the trip and dining experience alone can be enough to change up your routine and feel like you’re away from home.
Go On A Camera Walk And Explore The City
Oftentimes when we feel the need to getaway, it’s because we are stuck in a rut or in need of fresh inspiration. A quick fix is to choose to have a new perspective on your life and surroundings. Be grateful for what you have and you will quickly realize how your life is filled with endless opportunities and possibilities.
Once we checked out of the hotel and had our delicious and filling brunch, we set out to explore parts of Vancouver we don’t necessarily visit on a regular basis. So we set off on foot with a fully charged camera to take in the city views and enjoy the beautiful summer day. We began by walking down to Coal Harbour with the intention of capturing unique vistas of Vancouver that we often take for granted or are (very often) overlooked.
Our exploration paid off as we stumbled across a movie set for the filming of Deadpool 2. We didn’t get to see Ryan Reynolds in action but the movie production impressively covered several blocks of the city.
Grab your shopping list! Is there a purse, a wallet or beautiful homeware that you’ve had your eye on? Or do you simply want to do some window shopping and see what’s new and trending in stores? Consider a shopping trip into the city or mall and intend to have a relaxing and leisurely experience. Plan to visit a different mall or scope out some boutiques you’ve never been to.
After our Sunday happy hour meetup, Zack and I said goodbye to our friends and walked across Coal Harbour towards historic Gastown. We love this part of town and wanted to see what the cool and trendy boutiques were carrying as well. Gastown is great for shopping, people watching and brimming with photographic facades and corners.
